Hi everyone, and welcome to our final blog post before Christmas. I know we usually talk about the business applications of Google and the wonderful things they do, but since it’s so close to Christmas, we want to take a break from the serious stuff and show you some of the fun things Google can do for you. So, did you know that Google has several tricks up its sleeve to help you celebrate Christmas with a bit more magic? Here’s just 4 things you can ask your Google Home to do this festive season.
Hands-Free Christmas Music
One of the most obvious things you can do with the Google Home is get your festive feelings flowing with a little Christmas music. The Google Home can connect with Google Play Music, YouTube Music, Spotify and Pandora, so whatever your streaming service, you can make it work. Just say ‘Ok Google, play Christmas music’, and it will start playing with your default service. And if you’d rather not hear the same old songs on repeat all day, you can also create a playlist, give it a unique title and ask it to play that. No more fighting over the music on Christmas day! Plus, if you happen to have a Chromecast, you can throw that music to the TV and replace the album art with a crackling fireplace visual to create that warm, cosy feeling.
Control your Christmas Decorations
Given that one of the main functions of a smart speaker is controlling a smart home, it’s no surprise that you can use your Google Home to control your Christmas lights. All you need is a few Google Home compatible smart plugs and your normal festive lights. Plug it all together, and you’ll be able to turn your lights on and off with your voice. Just say ‘Hey Google, turn the Christmas lights on’. And if you really want to impress people, you can take advantage of the Google Home’s new ability to handle two commands at once and create a shortcut that plays Christmas music when you turn on the decorations. Now that’s cool!
Track Santa’s Sleigh
If you’ve got kids, the next two bits are for you. You probably know by now that Google has its own Santa Tracker, which is filled with games, quizzes and other festive activities for the little ones as they wait for Santa to visit. But you can also track Santa through your Google Home too. all you have to say is ‘Ok Google, track Santa’, or ‘Hey Google, where is Santa right now?’. Throughout December, Google will tell you what Santa is up to, like sweeping his workshop or helping the elves build toys. But when Christmas Eve comes around, you will be able to track Santa’s journey all through the day and night. But don’t stay up too late, or he might not come!
Talk To Santa
Not only can you track Santa using your Google Home, but you can talk to him too! You can ask your Google Home to ‘call Santa’, and you’ll get a direct call line to his workshop, where he’s preparing for a musical Christmas concert with his elves. But he isn’t sure what the best way to play it is, and you can help him choose. It’s a great way to add to the magic of Christmas and make it an interactive experience.
You can also call ‘Santa’s hotline’, and be connected with the man in the red suit himself. If you give him your name, he’ll tell you if you’re on the naughty list or the nice list this year. Then he asks you what you want for Christmas, and he will send the list on to his elves. So if your little one is worried that a letter won’t make it to Lapland in time, you can jump on the digital train and get it there right away.
So, that’s just some of the festive fun you can have with a Google Home, or a Google Assistant. They can also tell you jokes, sing you songs and generally become the life and soul of the party (if you let them). So go ahead and enjoy yourselves! And from all of us at Ad-Extra, we hope you have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
