We all know how important Google search is for businesses. You hear it every day – you need to keep your website up to date, optimised and full of useful content to be found on google. But there is another part of Google that a lot of businesses forget about – and that’s Google My Business. Google My Business helps you hone in on the local search, boosting your rankings for relevance, distance and prominence for searchers near to you. We’ve talked about this plenty of times before, and hopefully by now you’ve got the basics in place. So today, we wanted to share with you some tips to make the most of your Google My Business listings this year.


Fill In All Your Business Details 

Back to basics – you need to fill in your business information. That means name, address, phone number, hours of operation and business category at a bare minimum. But if you want to really get ahead, you need to make sure your descriptions are up to date and optimised as well. Previously the most you could do was select a business category, but with the new rollouts you have the ability to write your own description for the business. This is perfect for those niche businesses who don’t really fit into the categories. Writing a unique business description will help you communicate to buyers who you really are and what you actually sell.


Upload More (And Better) Photos

Here’s a fun fact about images on your GMB listing straight from Google:

“Businesses with photos receive 42% more requests for driving directions to their location from users on Google, and 35% more clicks through to their website than businesses that don’t have photos.”

So, if you want customers to visit your locations instead of your competitors, you need to add some photos. Ideally, you should have a range of photos that include:

  • Your premises
  • Your team
  • Your office interior
  • Your products

This means you can showcase your products and give candidates a sneak peek into your business, so they know what they’re getting into. It makes them feel more confident in dealing with you. If you provide a service like landscaping or home remodelling, show off the work you do in your listing. And don’t forget, other people can upload images to your Google My Business page too – and you should encourage them to do so!


Respond To All Of Your Reviews

Honestly, when was the last time you responded to a review on your Google My Business listing? For a lot of people, the answer is never – or certainly not in a long time. But the reviews on your GMB page can be a deciding factor in whether or not a buyer engages with your brand, and your responses are an important part of that. Just check out a few of these statistics about Local Consumer Reviews:

  • 97% of consumers looked online for local businesses in 2017
  • 85% of consumers trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations
  • Positive reviews make 73% of consumers trust a local business more
  • 68% of consumers left a local business review when asked
  • 30% of consumers say they’ve judged a business based on its responses to reviews


When people are looking to make a purchasing decision, the first place they look is at other peoples experiences. We all do it. It’s like reading the reviews on an Amazon product before hitting buy. And sometimes, those reviews might not be the glowing words you hope them to be. But that’s OK – because the way your business respond to negative comments is important too. So as well as encouraging people to leave you reviews, you should be actively responding to every review left on your page – either with thanks, or with a resolution to problems.


Use Posts To Promote Events, Offer And Content 

One of the most commonly neglected parts of the Google My Business lasting is the posts. They’ve been available since 2017, and allow businesses to post mini-articles about anything they like on their page. These posts will stick around for 7 days on mobile, and they will be permanent on desktop. These articles show up on your Google My Business knowledge panel, and help showcase you and your content even more. This includes:

  • Blog posts
  • Company news
  • eBook downloads
  • Upcoming events
  • Special offers
  • Product promotion


Really, anything about you, your business or your products/services.


Upload Videos

There is no better way to attract, engage and communicate with your buyers than through video. Video marketing is a huge up and coming trend in the digital marketing world, and if you want to make the most of it, you need to be including it in your Google My Business posts as well. In January 2018, Google rolled out the ability to add video to GMB listings. Since this is a relatively new feature, not many businesses are using it yet, which means you can get ahead of the curve and really take advantage of it.
