When it comes to running a business, there are a lot of things to consider. But one of the things you need to think about when it comes to marketing is Google, and more importantly, how to get Google to work for you. Google is a dog-eat-dog world, with everybody fighting for the same thing – to get to page 1, position 1. So, how do you win that fight? What can you do to make sure your business appears at the top of Google every time someone searches for your chosen keywords? The truth is there are thousands of ways to do this depending on your business, industry and customers – but there are a few tried and tested measures we can share with you.
Do Your Keyword Research
We’ve talked about keyword research a lot, but it always bears repeating, because frankly, it’s one of the single most important things you can do for your businesses success on Google. It should be the first step, the one that informs every other element of your strategy. In one of our previous blogs we talked about the various tools you could use to establish your keyword list, and then monitor it on an ongoing basis. If you’re not sure how to do this, we’ve written a handy guide on keyword research you can read here. Because honestly, without a keyword strategy, you won’t get close to beating the competition.
We’re not going to lie to you, link building takes time, it’s a long slog to get right, but the benefits to doing it are huge. Building backlinks are one of the most crucial ranking factors in the SEO universe, and is one of the best ways to understand how well your site is doing. Link building is all about creating content that can be linked to from other places online. Part of this will be your own content, while other strategies include collaborating with other businesses, guest blogging and generally providing forms of content that are valuable and useful to both the market and the reader. You may need to do some outreach to other businesses in order to do this – but most will be happy to work with you, as it gives them something in return.
Increase Your Exposure
SEO as a whole is all about increasing your exposure to Google and getting them to notice you. This means you need to be as visible as possible, in as many ways as possible. Google uses over 200 different factors to decide how to rank your website, and you need to hit as many of them as possible. This means optimising your website, getting a GMB account set up, having an active social media presence (one that engages with your audience), and providing fresh, shareable content to the internet on a regular basis. All of this gives Google more things to analyse, more points to see and a better idea of how to rank you. If you can do all of this, you will outperform the competition who are doing nothing.
Invest In Speed
One of the big SEO elements people forget about is page speed. The speed at which your pages load has a huge impact on how well your site will rank, and it’s something you can improve with a few simple changes. If you notice that your competitors are constantly outranking you for keywords despite having a good number of backlinks, keyword density and other elements, your page speed might be the problem. Improving your page speed can be as easy as changing the size of your images, compressing your text or moving to a faster server. If you’re not sure how fast your website is, Google’s Page Speed Insights tool is a good place to start.
